How do I install windows XP on a different hard drive?

I already have windows XP on my computer, but I would like it on an external hard drive (in case it crashes or something, just in case). Anyway, I put int he windows XP CD, and I start the installation process. i check new install, and later I click on change the install options or something, and I check the box that says %26quot;I want to select the hard drive or partition during setup%26quot;. However, after this, it just starts installing, and it never asks me where I want it installed.
