Can I install downloaded programs in my special download folder?
When I download programs from the web, like AVG antivirus or other free software from cnet, I put them in my download folder to keep them seperate from everything else. My question is, when I go to install them, it automatically uses the Computer/C drive/Program files path to install it in. Can I change that to have them install the program in the download folder instead? You can't. Not really. The default locations are designed to split 32-bit (WOW) and 64-bit programs into separate directories. I have a 1990 Toyota Celica GT, with the 2.2L 5SFE engine, hooked up to a five speed tranny. I am considering purchasing a set of 4-1 headers for my car. Would this be a bad thing, if I am running on the stock muffler, or would the stock muffler hold back the performance gains in any way?
BTW- would I notice a sound change, if I don't change the muffler?

The Main ones seem to be to do with the operating system you are upgrading from. If the CD is clean and in good condition you may need to uninstall software or even hardware to help the processor work faster!

Can't change resolution after clean install of Windows XP?
Hi, so I had Windows 98 on my Compaq Presario, and my sister often played a game called Petz 5 with no problems. A while ago though I %26quot;upgraded%26quot; to Windows XP via a clean install (I wiped my hard drive and installed XP.)
The problem is now the game won't run. I reinstalled it but it says the resolution has to be higher. And even after installing the driver for my monitor, I still can't change the resolution. It gives me a weird black error screen message saying the monitor can't handle it. WHICH doesn't make sense since I could play the game before...
Okay, so I have a Compaq Presario MV520 monitor and I THINK an SiS 530/620 video adapter, or at least that's what Windows is telling me.
If someone knows how I can get my resolution working like it was before that would be great! Oh, and if it is a driver issue, please paste the exact URL for them because I've been looking into this for months and can't find the right ones! :P

As the title is indicating, when I try to open downloaded files such as DivX, FLV Player, and etc., a beep shows up on a screen, and it says, %26quot;The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.%26quot; I am sure that I got softwares for windows vista version. Also, when I try to change some settings on my computer such as Control Panel %26gt;%26gt; System %26gt;%26gt; Advanced system settings, the same alert shows up with the click on the Adcanced system settings. I saw others answers for similar to my situation, and I made sure that I am logged in as an admin, and I also tried to use Right Click and Run as Administrator. But they didn't all work out. Do I need to reinstall my computer ? I am sure that I was able to install softwares and change all the settings before. Anyway, I hope someone can help me. Vista won't let me install anything or change home page? HELP PLEASE!?
Okay, tried to install Chrome first, then Pokerstars, then Full Tilt Poker, then another program and NONE of them will complete. It won't let me change the home page either, it's like the damn computer is on lockdown, and I am the administrator!
I have completely turned off the windows firewall, disabled the antivirus software I have (McAffee enterprise edition, don't think it's this- it hasn't given me this trouble on any of the other 4 computers that have the same software), I have tried to run it an an administrator, closed all other programs, made sure that IE7 will allow software to install without certificates, etc.. I feel like I have tried EVERYTHING. If you can help me here, I will seriously pay you $3 in Paypal if your solution works. Please help as I am getting frustrated!!!!Vista won't let me install anything or change home page? Do this...do a Disc Cleanup and a Disc Defragmentation.....after those two steps are accomplished...to to CNet.com downloads and download CC Cleaner...it will clean up the temporary internet files and all the other garbage on your computer.....also...when you download a seperate browser...make sure to keep the IE as your default.....I have Firefox as a Seperate browser and IE as the Default...reason...most of your programs on the computer recognize the IE and its settings....

The software on the hard drive is geared toward the mother board that you're running.
Chances are, unless you are replacing it with exactly the same mainboard, you're not going to have the video drivers, the sound card drivers, the software may or may not work and the specifications aren't going to be the same.
While you might get away with leaving it, chances are that you won't, and if it runs, its going to be a sloppy fit and not give you the best performance that you can get.
In a lot of cases, the older drivers are going to cause some conflicts too.
In theory you shouldn't technically HAVE to, but its a good idea.. I've had a few that worked. and a batch that went badly south when I tried just leaving the HD the way it was.

Should I change the RAM of my computer, or re-install Windows?
I have a SONY VAIO PCV RS-410 desktop computer. It is a Windows XP Professional SP3, with 248 MB of RAM. Recently it has been going pretty slow. My friend told me to re-install Windows and change the RAM. Problem is, I lost the CD for Windows, so my only option is to upgrade the RAM to 1GB. The store I went to has a 1GB RAM stick for $129. It also has a Windows XP Professional system CD for $140. Should I buy them both, or just upgrade the RAM? My other friend says it's a waste of money to buy Windows, so maybe I should change the RAM only. What do you think? How can i change the (default) program install drive from C: to D:?
my harddrive is partitioned into C: and D:. C: has just the OS, D: is where i stash all of my programs and files etc. alot of times i will run into an installation that WONT give me the option to change the directory to install to. it automatically tries to stuff its 500+MB self into the C: drive (which only has a measley 100MB free space) and it fails.
now if there was an option to change that default path from crowded C:, to the vast welcoming plains of D:, there wouldnt be a ****ing problem. now i've once had someone type up something in the %26quot;Run..%26quot; and have a simple window appear. he simply pressed a few buttons and all is well. problem is the pc went thru system recovery and the guy forgot what it was he typed in.

Then I had to system restore and it gave me 2005 that came with the original system and it extended my subscription so that I could get updates online. 2007 one had expired. What's the risk of performing a repair install?
If all a repair install does it go in and change the system files back to what the originally were leaving the applications and the files the same, is there a risk to performing it?

Yes you do need to install them for each user, but it does not install the whole program again. It just creates a link to the office programs. it should only take 2 mins for each user.

My comp starts up with system password normally. After installing a theme it changed my comp start up. It now goes from the password page to a black screen that says start windows xp home,or restore windows xp home.If I highlight windows xp home it goes back to password page then flicks back to the black screen. If I choose restore windows xp home I can get on to my comp. I would like to be able to turn on my comp type in my password and go to windows xp. Calm down cause I have your solution, so far it's worked for 3 other people I've answered who had the same issue. Try to get a different browser like Firefox. If downloading from Firefox doesn't work, try to go to the Control Panel and look at the Internet Options. Try changing all the Security and Privacy Settings to the lowest they can be. Unless it was dirt cheap. This means you have to do a clean install. And that means buying a brand new CD-ROM for XP. You will have problems if you try to install the same XP CD-ROM on two computers. XP is now out-dated. If your new computer has the speed and memory to handle it, I'd go with Vista.

Unless it is a dos based program or a program that just uses one .exe file and does not require an install, then, a program cannot be transferred between computers unless it has been installed on both. The install process creates program specific information in the registry and also loads some .dll files to the windows folder. A program must be installed on every computer in which it is to be used on. Sorry for the bad news.

Make sure to ground yourself too, with an anti static strap if you can. Anyways, compatibility should not be an issue, I don't think that you need drivers for processors, but if anything you should need to change things in the BIOS, by pressing F2 or Delete, depending on the manufacturer, on startup- it tells you.

I would recommend dividing your harddrive into two partitions and have your existing XP on the one and Windows 7 on the other so you can run from either or.
If you find you don't like Windows 7 then just delete the partition and re expand the XP one back to its original size
