How can i change over and install my new mouse?

i have a laser or perhaps its an optical mouse, its a bright red light underneath but its really slow and i want to change over to an old fashioned ball mouse. the original one is connected to the pc at the back and i can plug the new one in but how to i get the pc to accept the new mouse and change the settings for it to respond to that one?How can i change over and install my new mouse?turn off computer , unplug old mouse , plug in new mouse ,,turn on computerHow can i change over and install my new mouse?If the plug is rectangular, just unplug the old one and plug in the new one. If it's round, you have to turn the computer off, swap the mice and turn the computer back on.

A smooth surface may make the laser not respond properly.
